Founded in 1992, Stepping Stones Museum for Children is a private, nonprofit organization that offers hands-on exhibits and educational programs, as well as conducts special events and performances. The museum has a staff of more than 30 employees and over 225 adults and junior volunteers. It serves children and their parents, caregivers and educators. Stepping Stones Museum for Children is spread over an area of more than 10,000 square feet. The museum provides a variety of after-school and family programs. In addition, it operates a resource center. Stepping Stones Museum for Children is sponsored by individuals, corporations, foundations and government sources. The museum features a cafe and gift shop. It has received the Best Museum for Families award from the Westchester Family magazine. Through its partnership with health professionals, state agencies, schools and community organizations, the museum supports several community-based activities.

The Maritime Aquarium, formerly known as Maritime Center, is located in Norwalk, Conn. Established in 1988, it features various species of fish, mainly from Long Island Sound. Its exhibits include harbor seals, otters, jellyfish, cultural exhibits, touch tanks, Loggerhead turtles, and the large shark tank, which is a popular attraction. The aquarium also has a gift shop and an IMAX theater. The aquarium regularly houses temporary exhibits on diverse topics, such as dinosaurs and microbes. The cultural section of the aquarium explores boat building and human exploration of the sea. Its traveling teachers travel more than 26,000 miles every year to deliver education programs to over 25,000 students. The aquarium s Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment supplements the cost of aquarium education. The Maritime Aquarium s annual attendance is more than 500,000 visitors.
