Jonathan D. Carlson, MD, head clinician at Hawaii Pain & Spine in the Windward area of Kailua, Hawaii, is an interventional pain specialist who is double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management.  Dr. Carlson received his medical degree in 2004 from the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City and undertook his residency in anesthesiology at the University of California-Davis in Davis, California. He then completed an interventional pain management fellowship at Texas Tech University in 2009, where he was fortunate enough to train under Dr. Gabor Racz, one of the fathers of pain medicine. Dr. Carlson treats a wide variety of chronic pain disorders at Hawaii Pain & Spine. He has a particular interest in advanced pain interventions, such as neuraxial spine and peripheral nerve radiofrequency ablation, vertebral augmentation, interspinous process spacers, DRG stimulation, peripheral nerve, and spinal cord stimulation, percutaneous sacral fusion, and lumbar endoscopic discectomy.  Dr. Carlson treats a comprehensive range of chronic pain conditions, including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), chronic knee and shoulder pain, migraines, refractory neuropathic pain, and various chronic spine conditions. Dr. Carlson enjoys teaching pain management as well as seeing patients at Hawaii Pain & Spine. He was a clinical associate professor at Midwestern College of Medicine and has published papers in several peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. He’s also involved with several ongoing research studies.  Dr. Carlson was recently appointed treasurer and national executive board member for the American Society of Pain and Neurosciences (ASPN). He is also the current president of the Arizona Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (AZSIPP). When he’s not immersed in his mission to provide effective relief from pain for his patients at Hawaii Pain & Spine, Dr. Carlson enjoys surfing, golfing, playing guitar, doing mission work, and spending time with his ohana, or family.
