Dr. Maurer specializes in all aspects of spine and brain surgery; he has been consistently ranked as one of the top neurosurgeons in the country for more than 15 years. He is a nationally recognized surgeon and speaker on surgical methods and practices. His track record for success in neurosurgery is unparalleled in the areas of patient care and surgical quality. He earned both his B.A. in Biology and his medical degree from the University of Rochester, where he also completed post-doctoral residencies in Neurosurgery and General Surgery. Dr. Maurer is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves; a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is a clinical professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester, where he has held faculty appointments for more than 20 years. He also had a visiting professorship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. where he taught Army and Navy neurosurgeons, residents, interns, medical students and physician assistants about ballistics and head injuries. Dr. Maurer’s honors include the Joseph V. McDonald Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Neurosurgery Resident Staff (2010 and 2007); The Carl S. Hallauer Award from the Police Rosewood Club (2009); Edward & Jacqueline S. Harris Award from the Veterans Outreach Center, Inc. (2009); receiving a Key to the City from Mayor Robert Duffy in Rochester, New York (2009); Attending Teacher of the Year from the Medical & Surgical house staff at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington (1992) and the Bronze Star (for leadership in a combat theatre) from the United States Army in Washington, D.C. (1991). Dr. Maurer has made a wealth of contributions in the field, from educational conferences and national lectureships to teaching courses and making presentations. He has authored numerous journal articles, books and chapters, including topics such as disc herniation, spine surgery, and neurosurgical techniques.
