Better Basics, established in 1994, is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides reading intervention and enrichment programs in schools. Its motivators of reading enrichment program encourages fourth-graders to read for pleasure, and offers each participating class with a library with more than 50 books. The organization s schoolwide enrichment program is designed to supplement classroom activities and expand the scope of school experiences. This is done by bringing special programs and speakers to enhance curriculum and provide cultural arts, math and science presentations. The hip kids hooray reading intervention program is a scientifically-based supplemental reading program for at-risk learners in kindergarten through grade 12. It targets students identified through assessment measures and teacher recommendations. Teaching materials used are based on the areas of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.
