With the proliferation of chain stores and restaurants, sometimes it's hard for small mom-and-pop shops to distinguish themselves. This is not the case with Ruby Bakery. Ruby's is a popular local bakery that has amassed a vast and loyal following over the past 27 years. It is located in a charming shopping district at the corner of Eagle Rock Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard, across the street from Quizno's, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks. The bakery has many baked goods, such as cupcakes, cream puffs, and eclairs, although it specializes in cakes. A selection of cakes can be bought whole or by the slice, and custom orders can also be placed. Ruby Bakery has experience preparing cakes for almost any type of event—birthdays, weddings, retirement parties, and more. The store is open every day of the week, and customers are encouraged to just drop by.
The New City Diner is one of several diners in the area owned by the same family. It offers a high-end dining experience with an extensive menu that includes steak, pizza and Breyers and Ben and Jerry's ice cream. There is also a full bar and a large wine selection.
The Pita Market is located just west of the Pita Inn restaurant. Pita Inn opened in 1982 and the Market opened next door in 1999. Pita Inn bakes its own pitas in the building next to the market so they are always fresh. The market carries lots of prepared favorites from the restaurant. What a wonderful resource for Skokie and the North Shore.
