History of Bead Paradise The original Bead Paradise was a store owned by Elsie Schmeidlin, who ran the store during the 1960s in her historic landmark home in North Olmsted, Ohio. Over a period of five years, Ruth purchased the bulk of Elsies inventory and loved the name of the store, hence the Roman numeral II at the end of our name. Bead Paradise II was founded on August 15, 1987, opening in the upper level of the Co op Bookstore in Oberlin, Ohio. It was an instant success, mainly because there were very few bead stores in Ohio at that time, and after three and a half years there, it was time to expand. The business then merged with a clothing store, also in an upstairs location, called The Studio on the Park. Combining contemporary and unusual womens apparel with Ruths jewelry designs was a perfect fit, and the store grew in both fame and inventory. In May of 1997 the store moved to its current location at 29 West College Street, a three-story building. In July of 2001, Ruth purchased the building, which is listed in the National Register of Historical Places as part of the Downtown Oberlin Business District. The selection of merchandise in the store is truly amazing. We carry a full and diverse line of vintage, ancient, and new goods. Our collection of findings is extensive, with a wide variety of handmade sterling, gold-filled, copper, and brass ; it also includes many vintage base metals and 18K gold. The focus is on unusual and rare beads and components from Africa and Asia. Our vendors are direct importers from the countries of origin, and the collection of rare trade beads from Africa is unparalleled. Antique silver, brass and 18K gold beads and pendants from the African continent, India, Yemen, and Afghanistan are a major focus in Ruths designed jewelry, and our selection is vast! Our antique seed beads and vintage German glass add flavor to our large selection of Czech and Japanese glass. Our selection of stone beads includes a wide variety, from inexpensive semiprecious stone to ruby, emerald, sapphire, and diamond beads, and we are always on top of the latest design elements manufactured in India and China. Our Swarovski crystal collection combines vintage and discontinued shapes and colors along with the full line of current goods. The store is focused on designers and unusual stock for the jewelry trade. We encourage any interested beginners to jump in, take a class or two, and become full-fledged jewelry designers in a short period of time. People of all ages and gender love to bead, and with 20 years of serving the publics beading needs, our staff is top-notch and provides friendly and thorough customer service. Our clothing lines are ever-changing, keeping up with trends and customer requests. We introduce new lines every season, many of which are small designer labels. We carry mostly machine washable apparel made of natural fibers, and our sizes and styles are selected for every age, size, and ethnicity. Clothing lines we carry include Cut Loose, Nomadic Traders, Eileen Fisher, Flax, Oh My Gauze, Tianello, Putumayo, Dunia, MycraPac, Sugar Lips, LA Fixsun, Papillon, Star of India, Magdalena, and others. We strive to support socially responsible companies and steer clear of bottom-priced goods from "sweatshop" factories. Our moderate price range can fit every budget and we try to buy fashion-forward styles. Our full line of natural health and beauty products is selected with price and quality in mind. The ingredients are all natural and none of the brands we carry conduct animal testing. We carry Bach Flower Essences, Badger Balm, Burts Bees, Toms of Maine, Jason, Earth Science, Kiss My Face, Wyndmere Essential Oils & Blends, Mountain Ocean, Archipelago, Aroma Naturals, Tiger Balm, Sunshine Spa, Heritage, and Aura Cacia, along with natural hennas, pure shea butter, and soy candles. Jerrys Rock and Gem was established in 1954 as Jerrys Agate Shop by a Boeing machinist named Jerry Appleton. He wanted to supply his own rock habit and to fill the needs of other rock hounds. Jerry moved the store to its current location in 1962, as the business had out grown the restrictions of his own home. Then in 1982, after years of enjoyment, Jerry decided to retire and sold the business to a friend of mine, Tom, a journeyman jeweler and rockhound. With Toms help the business evolved from a Rock shop to a Rock shop, Jewelry design, manufacture and repair store. Then in 1980 Tom asked if I would like to buy the store from him. HE DIDNT HAVE TO ASK ME TWICE. Being a wholesale gem dealer and Hardcore Rock and Fossils Hound, I saw a fantastic opportunity to combine my G.I.A. training and love of gemstones, with my enjoyment of rocks and fossils. Now Jerrys would be a Rock, Lapidary, Jewelry and Gem store. The only thing left was Fossils and beads. I knew just the right person for the job, Joan, who has a Phd. in Paleontology and the trademark on Mt. St. Helens Emerald. DONT MISS OUR LINK TO THE GLASS PRODUCTS PAGE. ( OPENING SOON ) Joan owned a Rock shop in the neighboring city of Tacoma. As luck would have it she was considering a change and six months later she joined us at Jerrys. WOW!!! Village Beads is a dream come true for our family. Cheri Harthcock was the first member of our family to fall in love with the art of beading. It was not long before her mother and her daughters were also beading. Cheri and her mother, Ann Bankston soon began teaching classes in their homes for all their friends. When Ann was faced with a career change at age 60, she decided, after much prayer, to try to make their dream of a bead store in Mississippi a reality. Village Beads opened in February 2000 in a very small location in Ridgeland. The response was wonderful. The store has grown every year and we are now in our 3rd location. We now have a large store with a wide selection of the best quality beads available. Jim Bankston joined the business full time in 2001. His fourteen years experience in the retail business and marketing degree were needed as the business grew so rapidly. He has been creating glass lampwork beads for 2 years and his beads are sought by many for their special bead creations. Allen Bankston is the newest family member to become a part of the business. Allen has 24 years retail experience and is pleased to now have a job to showcase his creative abilities. Allen is working with PMC, stones, and silversmithing. His hand crafted rings of natural stone and sterling silver are a big hit with everyone. Paul Burlingame is not a family member, but a loyal and long time family friend. His parents are Jims Godparents. Paul came to help us when we moved in January 2001 and liked it so much he stayed to work full time. Pauls organizational skills ensure that orders are filled and shipped in a timely manner. We like for our customers to feel welcome and enjoy their time shopping in our store. Our goal is to provide a clean, friendly atmosphere with all the latest trends in jewelry. We also strive to provide classes to encourage your creativity and increase your skill level.
