An area landmark since its opening in 1926 (when it was a vaudeville house), El Portal Theatre is a living legend. Today, the venue stages dramatic, comedy and musical productions that routinely garner rave reviews. Out front, there's an eye-catching art deco marquee that lights up at night; a vintage ticket kiosk sits underneath it. The entryway is lined with framed show posters. Inside—thanks to a 1990s remodel—the theater has three performance spaces: the MainStage, with its 360 seats, the Forum Theatre and its 95 seats, and the Studio Theatre, which is the 42-seat venue used by Theatre Tribe. Parking is available in the rear, and the theater is extremely convenient to the North Hollywood Metro station. For pre- or post-show dining, a number of options are within walking distance.
Cafe 939 is a Berklee College of Music student-run coffeehouse. The shop is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers live music and performances including styles such as rock, jazz, hip-hop, electronica, and avant-garde.
Coffee specialties include mocha, lattes, cappuccinos and espressos as well as chai and hot tea. The shop also offers sandwiches and breakfast goods including bagels, scones, and danishes.
The café showcases talent from local areas as well as Berklee student performers. The location has a 200-capacity concert space, PA and lighting systems, video and DVD capabilities, and flexible seating. Berklee students also work as ushers, box office clerks, and stage crew.
The Julia Morgan Theater has hosted a wide range of theatrical and musical performances over the years. Its past shows have included "The Nutcracker," "Chicago," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "Little Women" and "Once Upon a Mattress." It also has comedians like Will Durst regularly performing at the venue. Furthermore, the Julia Morgan Theater is the home of the Berkeley Ballet Theater, Eastbay Music Together, the Berkeley Playhouse, and The Youth Musical Theater Company.
Arcada Theatre is an old-fashioned performing arts center. A vaudeville venue in its early days, this theater has been hosting a variety of performing arts acts and movies since it was refurbished five years ago. A nonprofit theater group that offers local talent performance opportunities for both adults and children. The Chautauqua Playhouse is the winner of the 2010 Arts Management Excellence Award and a member of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Its slogan is "providing quality theatre for 34 seasons."
