With temperate weather year-round, why shop indoors? Built in 2002 next to the historic Original Farmer's Market in the Fairfax District, The Grove is an outdoor mall that looks like a movie set. Its dancing fountain, Art Deco signage and working trolley give it a squeaky-clean Disney feel, but don't let the facades fool you completely. You can still do some serious credit card damage at shops like J. Crew, Nordstrom, Barney's New York and Crate & Barrel. There is also a Pacific Theatres multiplex for escaping the bright L.A. sun.

Parking and public transportation at The Grove
The on-site parking structure is free for the first hour. Rates go up after that and can be found on The Grove website. Some restaurants and shops provide validation so bring your ticket with you. Valet is also available at a higher rate, but validation is not accepted and a tip is expected. The Metro Rapid #720 bus will stop at Wilshire/Fairfax, although let's be honest, most people drive in L.A.

Best and worst time go to The Grove
Weekends are naturally the most crowded, especially during opening weekend for a highly-anticipated movie playing at the theatre. For a unique experience, visit during the Christmas season when fake snow falls. So L.A. There's also a huge Christmas tree and decorations abound.

Admission to The Grove
It's free -- although you'll likely end up paying for parking. And lunch or dinner. And shopping.

Must see/do at The Grove.
The perfect family day starts with a free trolley ride, lunch at The Cheesecake Factory, a matinee and a trip to American Girl Place. Don't worry, there's an Apple Store for the grown-ups. And if you fancy a burger that drips down your arm, try Umami Burger, a growing chain that got its start in Los Angeles. Unusual craft beers are also on offer.

Other places to visit near The Grove
Right next to The Grove is The Original Farmer's Market, an LA establishment since 1934. Walk through stalls of butchers, bakeries, delis and boutique shops. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and La Brea Tar Pits are around the corner on Wilshire Blvd., and the upscale Beverly Center mall is the other direction if your wallet needs more of a workout.

Insider tip for visitors to The Grove
The Original Farmer's Market is a great alternative to the mostly chain-restaurant fare at The Grove. Try Magee's Kitchen for a good old-fashioned corned beef sandwich and Bennett's for their award-winning homemade ice cream. You've got the juxtaposition of new and old right next to each other. The Grove also has a concierge who can help with anything from dinner reservations to personal shopping.
