The Barrow County Sheriff s Department is located in central Barrow County in Winder, Ga. The law enforcement agency also serves the Georgia communities of Auburn, Carl, Statham and Bethlehem. The Sheriff s Department provides law enforcement and public safety service throughout the county. Barrow County is a suburb to Metro-Atlanta. It was created in 1914 as a way of settling a dispute among the citizens of the City of Winder, which at the time was located at the juncture of three counties. A new county was created from parts of Gwinnett, Jackson, and Walton counties, with Winder designated as the county seat. The new county was named for David Crenshaw Uncle Dave Barrow, long-time chancellor of the University of Georgia.

The Barrow County Courthouse and Detention Center, which relocated from the historic downtown courthouse in 2009, is located off Ga. Highway 211. The couthouse houses the county's magistrate and probate courts, the district attorney's office and the office for the clerk of superior court. The county detention center is also located at this site.
