The new Tuscaloosa County Jail was constructed in 1995 at a cost of $8.2 million. This facility houses both minimum- and maximum-security inmates serving time for both misdemeanor and felony arrests. The technology, kitchen, medical and dental care and living quarters at this facility are among the most modern in the state, which is why in 2002 the Tuscaloosa County Jail became the only county jail in Alabama to receive accreditation from the American Correctional Association. The Tuscaloosa County Jail is under the direction of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff s Office.
