The John J. Kane Regional Centers, owned and operated by Allegheny County, are four facilities with a bed capacity of 360-plus beds per center. The centers provide skilled nursing care to individuals who meet the requirements for admission. Kane Regional Centers offer medical care, a full rehabilitation program and specialty medical clinics. Established in 1946, Allegheny County Sanity Authority provides wastewater treatment services to 83 communities, including the City of Pittsburgh. Its treatment plant is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the Ohio River Valley, processing up to 250 million gallons of wastewater daily. Allegheny County Sanity Authority has designed and constructed conveyance, storage, and treatment facilities that eliminate the sanitary sewer overflows of the region. The agency serves nearly 320,000 residential, commercial and industrial accounts representing a service population of 900,000. Through its Scholastic Outreach Program and annual initiatives, such as Open House and the Summer Science Program, it creates awareness on issues, pertaining to wastewater treatment and sustainability.

The Allegheny County Police Department, established in 1932, is a full-service law enforcement agency that prevents crime, protects residents lives and their property, suppresses criminal activity and apprehends law offenders. A dynamic partnership of conservation professionals providing quality service to protect Lehigh Countys diverse natural resources through leadership, technical assistance, education, land protection, promotion of sustainable development, and protection of water and soil quality. The Lehigh County Conservation District was established by Lehigh County Commissioners on September 26, 1946, at the request of a significant number of landowners in the county. It is one of sixty-six conservation districts in Pennsylvania and nearly 3, 000 nationwide. At that time, its primary purpose was to address soil erosion from mostly agricultural properties. Governed by a volunteer board of citizen directors, it was staffed by employees of the Soil Conservation Service in the US Department of Agriculture, who worked with farmers to develop farm conservation plans. The past half-century has seen the District employ its own staff to address a variety of resource management concerns: agricultural nutrient management, biosolids application, as well as soil conservation ; erosion and sediment control from urban development sites, farmland preservation, conservation education, and watershed protection. Currently, fourteen employees work in these program areas, most under delegation agreement or contract with state agencies. The District is funded by three major sources: county government, state government and user fees. Donations and fundraising activities help fund educational programs. The current board consists of three farmers and three public directors and one county commissioner. Directors, appointed by the County Executive, serve four-year terms, and meet monthly to set policy, hear progress reports, and plan the Districts work. The Pennsylvania State Conservation Commission guides them in their operations, and they belong to both the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts and National Association of Conservation Districts The District also belongs to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Resource Conservation & Development Council, a seven county partnership of government agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses dealing with land conservation, water resources, community development and environmental concerns.
