Ashraf Abaza, MD provides the full scope of psychiatric care for patients at TMS Medical Therapy of Suffolk County. Over the last three decades, Dr. Abaza has successfully treated patients in Suffolk County, New York who’ve been diagnosed with clinical depression, treatment-resistant depression, postpartum depression, and the myriad medical and psychiatric conditions associated with depression. He’s an expert in complex psychopharmacology and medication management, but he’s also the rare type of psychiatrist who offers individual psychotherapy and advanced treatment options for depression and PTSD, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Dr. Abaza welcomes patients needing treatment and ongoing support for a range of psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Dr. Abaza is trained in two psychiatric specialties: disaster psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry. As a disaster specialist, he’s uniquely qualified to support patients suffering from psychiatric disorders due to trauma from natural and human-made disasters. Consultation-liaison psychiatrists address co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions, such as patients with depression and heart disease or a substance use disorder. After graduating with honors from the renowned School of Medicine at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Abaza ran a private practice for five years, then went on to complete his residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale University Hospital of SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at SUNY at Stony Brook, where he gained experience treating psychiatric disorders in the context of severe medical illness and burn traumas. Dr. Abaza is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and eligible for certification from the American Board of Psychosomatic Medicine. He’s proud to lead task forces on suicide prevention at the Northport VA Medical Center and has extensive experience in suicide prevention among veterans, university students, and geriatric populations.

Psychiatry, Psychiatrist I am a native of Virginia and grew up outside of Lynchburg. I began working in healthcare at the age of 16 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. I was graduated valedictorian of my class at Lynchburg University, and then attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. I completed a General Psychiatry Residency at VCU Health and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. I joined the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University as a Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. I have been treating patients for over 30 years and developed innovative psychiatric interventions. I oversaw the developmen of a new curriculum for the medical school. I also taught/trained medical students, psychiatry residents and child psychiatry fellows on the neuroanatomical, neurophysiological and neurochemical basis of behavior in health and illness. I have been involved nationally in the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I help to prepare the United States Medical Licensing Examination for physicians. I believe that it is of utmost importance that I develop a relationship with my patients based on sensitivity, compassion and trust. I will never tell you what to do--we work together to look at the various treatment options, individualizing the unique plan based on your needs.

Gagandeep Singh, MD, is board certified in both child and adolescent psychiatry and general adult psychiatry and takes a personalized approach with all of his patients. With a private practice located in Freehold and Monroe Township, New Jersey, he handles a wide range of mental health concerns, from depression and anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Singh was born in India, but immigrated to America as a young child and grew up in New Jersey. He personally understands the influence culture has on individual issues and communities, especially when it comes to mental health stigmas. Through his medical practice and community involvement, Dr. Singh strives to educate the public about mental health issues, with a focus on the particular needs of the South Asian community. Dr. Singh’s approach is personalized and unique in the in-depth initial assessment he provides, as well as the extended duration of time he allows for each of his sessions. The extended sessions allow for Dr. Singh to better understand the specific needs and preferences of each patient. Each appointment experience is unique and specifically tailored to that specific patient, building a foundation on rapport and trust. Dr. Singh attended Rutgers University on a merit-based scholarship, where he majored in biology and psychology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers University) - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he also completed both his general psychiatry residency and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Singh is a practicing Sikh and speaks four languages: English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Spanish. When he’s not at the office, Dr. Singh enjoys sports, cultural dances, poetry, writing, and stage performances.  These are Dr. Singhs thoughts about the work he is fortunate to do, in his own words. The Practice of Psychiatry  "The practice of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as Adult Psychiatry, is as exciting as it is varied.   This specialty is truly one of the last bastions in modern medicine that allows the practitioner to connect with the patient, and one where the value of the patients input is not underestimated. You can read my blog to understand my thoughts on the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and providing mental health services to society as a whole, as well as specific barriers faced by the South Asian community."   The Art of Psychiatry  "Understanding the impact of ones life experiences, and the interaction with a persons biology and temperament is an art that few have the opportunity to practice on a routine basis.  A careful evaluation can reveal several areas of focus for medication and therapy during the treatment of the individual. It is this art that defines the profession of Psychiatry - especially Child and Adolescent Psychiatry."
