Ammar S. Bafi, MD, is a highly experienced cardiothoracic surgeon at the MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Using advanced surgical techniques, he treats adult cardiac surgical disease, such as valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease. In addition, he specializes in mitral and aortic valve repair as well as off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. With more than 20 years of experience as a principal attending cardiothoracic surgeon, he has performed more than 8,000 heart operations with superb results, exceeding the national average. After receiving his medical degree from the George Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Bafi completed a general surgery internship at the North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center. He then returned to the George Washington University Medical Center to complete a six-year general surgery residency, and finally, a specialty three-year residency in cardiothoracic surgery, including one year at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Bafi a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a member of the Cardiovascular Surgery Program Quality Improvement Committee at MedStar Health.
