The company does not own any generating plants or the distribution lines that bring power to individual homes and businesses. VELCO is a private company owned by the states retail utilities, including investor-owned, municipal and cooperative utilities. VELCO was organized in 1956 to develop an integrated transmission system to interconnect the numerous Vermont electric utilities and to provide them with access to economic power from the St. Lawrence River project. The initial 224-mile system was placed in service in September, 1958. Its current transmission system consists of 534 miles of transmission lines, 25 substations and a 200 MW back-to-back HVDC Converter.
