This regional office for the State Department of Natural Resources oversees management of the South Puget Sound area, which encompasses four counties: King, Pierce, Kitsap, and Mason, as well as parts of Lewis and Snohomish counties. The office manages 204,000 acres of state forest, agriculture, urban, and conservation lands, regulating forest practices and leading wildfire protection on 3.1 million acres of state and private forestland. Specialists work with landowners and tribal representatives to oversee logging policies that ensure habitat protection. The office also manages 30 recreational sites in the region including the Tahoma, Elbe Hills, and Tiger Mountain state forests. Visitors come to the office for a variety of needs, including logging, timber sales and firewood, recreational hunting and maps. While the office is located on State Route 410 en route to Mount Rainier National Park, it does not oversee management of the park. Questions about Mount Rainier should be directed to the National Park Service or the U.S. Forest Service.
