Metro protects open space and parks, plans for land use and transportation, and manages garbage disposal and recycling for more than 1 million residents in counties in Portland, Ore. It acquires and restores natural areas, protects fish and wildlife habitat, provides parks and natural areas, and supports volunteer stewardship. The organization teaches natural gardening, and operates the Oregon Zoo, which has various conservation programs.
