WellPath is a health care plan with an extensive network that includes approximately 9,000 physicians and 75 hospitals. Its most popular plans are the WellPath Direct Access Health Maintenance Organization plan, the WellPath Direct Access Point-of-Sale plan, a multi-option product that is a combination of those plans and a preferred provider organization plan. WellPath also offers prescription drug and vision coverage. The plan s coverage area encompasses more than 35 counties in North Carolina and 10 in South Carolina. WellPath is the result of the combination of three separate plans. Principal Health Care of the Carolinas was purchased by Coventry Health Care in 1998, creating Coventry Health Care of the Carolinas, which merged with WellPath in 2001. It is underwritten by Coventry Health Care, which provides health care services to roughly 160 million people. WellPath maintains offices in Morrisville, Charlotte and Charleston, N.C.
