Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization that is responsible for the maintenance of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and a more than 250,000-acre greenway extending from Maine to Georgia. Headquartered in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., the organization operates a sales distribution center in Kearneysville, W.Va., and regional offices in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. Its protection and stewardship program focuses on keeping the footpath clear of natural overgrowth. The organization also writes, publishes and distributes official trail maps and guidebooks. Additionally, it publishes a general bimonthly magazine for its members. Appalachian Trail Conservancy also operates a visitor center that includes an information desk, reading library and store.
