Richard Butler School is a middle school serving grades five through eight. The average school day is six hours and 48 minutes long, with five hours and 48 minutes of instructional time. Students in the 5th grade remain in homeroom for the majority of their academic instruction. Students in 7th and 8th grades are grouped together for mathematics instruction.
RISE Academy is a TEAM School, part of a network run by KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) in Newark. Serving African-American and Latino students in low-income communities, the school aims to prove that students of all backgrounds can succeed academically. Some 85 percent of the students qualify for free or subsidized school lunches and 14 percent have special needs. The school prides itself on working with students who start out below grade level in reading and math, but after a few years are achieving at above-average levels compared to their peers in Newark and across New Jersey. Ninety percent of the students go on to college.
St Joseph's School is a Catholic school for children in grades pre-k through 8. The school offers a challenging academic program in addition to religious instruction. The academic curriculum includes computer science, math, Social Studies, and Spanish to name a few. Activities include baseball, basketball, volleyball and soccer. At St Joseph's School, the focus is on developing the academic skills of each child in a nurturing environment.
McKinley Elementary School serves grades Pre-K to 8 in the Newark Public School District. It is headed by Principal Carolyn Granato and holds just over 900 students.
