With two locations, The Half Hollow Hills Community Library serves the residents of Dix Hills and Melville. The library features a wide selection of books, movies, music, periodicals, reference materials and children's books, in addition to offering internet access, computer use and research assistance services. The Dix Hills building, which serves as the main branch, is located across the street from one of the district's two high schools, Hills East. The library's Melville location is located across the street from one of the district's seven elementary schools, Sunquam Elementary. It is a public library serving a population of 43,616 residents. The library circulates 512,735 items per year and has a collection containing 335,625 volumes.
The Melville branch of Half Hollow Hills Library offers, in additions to books, movies and music, the use of computers, copy machines, scanners and wireless printers. Language conversation groups, book clubs, and career counseling services are held here, and there are homework-help programs for kids and teens.
