Three Rivers Park District -The Landing -- formerly known as Historic Murphy's Landing -- is an often overlooked landmark located in Shakopee, MN (a southwestern suburb of Minneapolis) on Highway 101 East. Although it may be often overlooked, it is certainly one of Minnesota's hidden gems when it comes to beauty, history and relaxation on a budget.
Located on a lush 88 acre parcel of land along the Minnesota River, this living history museum encompasses something for almost everyone. With costumed tour guides, original and authentic buildings and a small farm complete with era specific farm animals, you may just feel as though you've traveled in time back to the 19th century.
Parking at Three Rivers Park District - The Landing
Visitor parking is found at the Main Entrance (the East Entrance) and is free of charge during business hours. After you're parked your vehicle, walk over to the white building noted as the Visitor's Center. You'll be greeted by knowledgeable staff who are prepared to fill you in on the day's current scheduled events as well as interesting tidbits about the park.
Best and worst time to visit Three Rivers Park District - The Landing
Since The Landing is a living history museum located in Minnesota, it is open seasonally. Now this doesn't necessarily mean it's open only during the warmer months (it's open year-round), but you'll want to verify their schedule before taking the drive to avoid being disappointed because of weather closings. Additionally, you'll want to note that it is not open on the weekends from January 1st through March 31st, except for special events.
Since it's a living historical museum, the best time to take it in is on the weekend, 10 a.m. to early 2 or 3 p.m. in the afternoon. If you like to time travel in a quiet atmosphere, avoid attending Monday through Friday during the school year because elementary schools frequent The Landing for history related field trips.

The admission price to The Landing is so reasonable, it's almost impossible to pass up. It's an inexpensive outing that is sure to put a smile on everyone's face and offers fresh air, beautiful scenery and a wealth of local historical knowledge.

The farmyard animals are always fun to see. Apparently they enjoy visitors because many will walk right up to the edge of their pen to say hello to you. Make sure you check out the General Store and the School - you'll be amazed at the differences (and similarities) of life then and now. Don't be shy, ask your tour guide questions.
Insider tips for visitors at Three Rivers Park District - The Landing
If you want to simply walk the grounds (not enter the buildings) admission is free. However, I would strongly recommend paying the reasonable admission fee because it's well worth it to look inside the buildings and to have the tour guides walk you through history. Remember to wear comfortable shoes because you'll be walking along a gravel road; sandals and open toed shoes may become problematic with small pebbles. This place is an experience you won't want to miss.
