Iowa Legal Aid is a nonprofit organization that provides critical legal assistance to low-income Iowans who have nowhere else to turn. Iowa Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys help the legal system work for those who cannot afford help with legal issues. Typical cases involve problems with basic necessities, fundamental rights or safety, including: Offices are located in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Mason City, Ottumwa, Sioux City and Waterloo. Many of Iowa Legal Aids clients receive help from volunteer lawyers through Volunteer Lawyers Projects operated by Iowa Legal Aid, the Polk County Bar Association and the Scott County Bar Association. Over 2, 900 volunteer attorneys are signed up with one of Iowas Volunteer Lawyers Projects. Each year participating attorneys provide free services valued at over $2 million to clients referred by Iowa Legal Aid.

Founded in 1979, the North Iowa Transition Center is a nonprofit organization that provides community-based services for individuals suffering from various mental illnesses and psychiatric disabilities. The center, also known as NITC, offers a variety of rehabilitative solutions, including informal counseling, personal care guidance, psychiatric care, and medication and symptom management services. It provides transportation, affordable housing, housekeeping, meal planning, educational and budgeting services. The North Iowa Transition Center also organizes various games, trips, and birthday and Christmas parties. The center offers assistance with the development of self-sufficiency and independent living skills. In addition, it provides respite care, work assessment and remedial services.
