Historic Bethabara Park was one of the first Moravian settlements in North Carolina and was founded in 1753. A National Historic Landmark, it was a site of the German-speaking, Protestant settlement located in Wintson-Salem, N.C., on more than 175-acres of wildlife preserve area with over 125 species of birds. The preserve includes more than 6-acres of wetland area with a over 650-foot long boardwalk, a duckboard walk, walking trails, a colonial arboretum of trees in Reuters inventory and a bog garden of unusual native plants. It also features a natural history resource center for educational programs to study the history of the colonists in their natural environment. Historic Bethabara Park became a nonprofit museum in 1970, offering a restored and furnished 1788 church, archaeological ruins, visitor center with introductory video, exhibits and tours with costumed guides and a French and Indian War fort and colonial and medical gardens. The museum s gift shop offers handcrafted baskets, pottery and tinware, books, colonial collectibles and items for children.
