Barry J. Richman, MD, is a psychiatrist certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of emotional and mental health conditions at his clinic in Manhattan, New York. Dr. Richman works with patients from a broad range of backgrounds and has many patients who work in creative and artistic fields. He also has a particular interest in LGBTQ issues. Most commonly, patients consult Dr. Richman for help with mood problems such as depression or anxiety disorders. These are problems that require an integrated approach: a medical assessment, a detailed and careful history, and a review of the individual’s current situation and medical and genetic history. Additionally, an accurate diagnosis requires thoughtful analysis of the person’s upbringing, family life, cultural and social background, and many other factors that can influence the expression of particular feelings and symptoms. A thorough understanding of the complexity of the individual, in particular, their underlying character, is what makes the diagnosis accurate, relevant, and ultimately treatable. Dr. Richman received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, then completed an internship in internal medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, also in New York. He followed this with a three-year psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he served as chief resident of the outpatient clinic and won a teaching award. He continued his training with a fellowship in psychiatry and law at New York University before opening his private practice. He currently has a faculty appointment at Mt. Sinai Icahn School of Medicine. Dr. Richman’s interests outside of work include a passion for travel, architecture, language, and collecting contemporary art and design. He has lived in Manhattan most of his life and has had the good fortune to have lived abroad and traveled extensively, which he believes has given him a wide-ranging perspective and enhanced cultural sensitivity.

For over 20 years of studies and practice, I have been in wonder and in awe about what people struggle with. Next to nurturing my children, I consider this calling my highest mission: It is to make deep contact with the desires and fears of fellow human beings and to honor and celebrate the human condition in all its contradictions and promises.
