Take advantage of classes in the morning or afternoon from experienced advisors. High Ridge Driving School also offers eight-hour adult drug and alcohol/safe-driving classes. The Stamford Center is home to The Beacon School, an alternative to traditional private or public education. Based on the founding principles of the Greenwich Education Group, this K-12 school provides children with comprehensive, customized curricula, in-depth art and music instruction. Founded in 1991, Trinity Catholic High School is a co-ed college-preparatory Diocesan high school with a rich tradition in academic excellence, athletic performance and community service. Regionalized from St. Mary's in Greenwich, Stamford Catholic and Norwalk Central, Trinity offers its student body an academic program with 219 courses, including advanced placement in English literature, chemistry and more. Trinity is the home of the Crusaders, a comprehensive athletic program that competes in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference with 11 men's sports and 11 women's sports. The school also has an organized community service program in which its students are required to dedicate time to working with charitable organizations such as the Stamford Red Cross, AmeriCares and Easter Seals.
The Italian Center of Stamford (IC) serves Stamford and the surrounding towns with numerous recreational and educational activities for people of all ages. The club is located on twenty-eight acres of land in North Stamford.
A general membership provides individuals and families with access to an indoor pool, three outdoor pools, tennis and basketball courts, an indoor gym and a miniature golf course. The athletic department hosts personal-training sessions, a swim team and birthday parties. There's also a men's club, which offers its members exclusive locker rooms, steam rooms and golf outings.
General members also receive discounts on IC's licensed Nursery School and Kiddie Camp for three to six-year olds. Day Camp is for children entering kindergarten through 6th grade. Extended hours are also available.
IC runs a banquet and conference center for weddings, corporate affairs and other special events. IC can accommodate up to 600 guests, and clients have three spacious rooms to choose from. Founded in 1854, the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford is well-known in the city for its unique structure, which was built in 1954 and has earned Church landmark status. Known as "the Fish Church," First Presbyterian's building is shaped like a fish and features beautiful stained glass windows and a 32-foot high wooden cross placed in front. The church offers a worship service on Sunday as well as Sunday School, and is known for hosting several missionary trips throughout the year to New Orleans.
The church also runs a nursery school for children, ages three to five. Classes are held in the church's education area and children are educated in various areas of study, including music, science, reading and art.
Founded in 1977 and located in North Stamford, The Canaan Ridge School offers a private-school education for students in nursery school through second grade. Canaan Ridge uses the Montessori method and offers its students science, art and music classes as well as an early start in French and Mandarin. The school is equipped with a playground, pool and a small computer area, and is open during the summer for camp. Canaan Ridge is also involved in Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program, which inspires children to become aware of, and active in environmental issues affecting their communities.
