The Louisville Zoological Gardens is the state zoo of Kentucky and is one of the most popular family attractions in Louisville. The zoo encompasses over 130 acres and is home to approximately 1,500 animals, birds, and insects. The zoo is divided into different areas which mimic the habitat of the animals enclosed and includes such as diverse zones as Glacier Run, Gorilla Forest, HerpAquarium, Islands, and many more. Other events, concerts, festivals, and featured attractions take place at the zoo, which is open year-round.
Best and worst times to go to the Louisville Zoo
The most popular time to go is during the summer months, when kids are off from school -- which means this is the worst time to go. The heat and humidity make for a miserable day and most animals don't come out of their cages or enclosures during the daytime heat. The fall and spring, during earlier morning or late evening, are the best times to go. Another good time, and fun event, is the "World's Largest Halloween Party", held at the zoo around Halloween because the animals are more likely to be out and treats are given to all those who come dressed in costume.
Must see/do at the Louisville Zoo
The award-winning Glacier Run exhibit is one of the most popular and features polar bears, grizzly bears, seals, sea lions, and more. Another popular exhibit is the award-winning four-acre Gorilla Forest, which is designed to look like gorillas are in their natural habitat, not in cages. The zoo also has rides, play equipment, a ropes course, and a splash park, making for an interactive day.
Admission to the Louisville Zoo
The zoo has hours which change with the season, so be sure to know when opening and closing times are. Admission prices range from $16 for adults to $7 for those in a group. Discounts are given for seniors and military. Admission prices that include the rides and activities are more expensive.

There is a charge to park at the zoo, but parking is plentiful, even during busy times.

Public transportation does go to the zoo. On TARC, use Route 43, Poplar Level.
Food at the Louisville Zoo
The zoo has picnic areas and allows patrons to bring in coolers and food for this purpose. However, there are also dining options within the zoo. Food vendors are found throughout the park and include the very casual ice cream and slushy stands to options which feature full menus. Prices vary depending on the type of food purchased, but are within general attraction prices. A recommendation for families is the African Outpost, open year-round, where guests can get everything from traditional chicken nuggets and salads to kid's meals and light snacks. For the more adventurous, try Wild Burger, located in the Australia section, which features tater tots covered in such unique toppings as beer cheese, green chili avocado spread, and onion bacon jam.

The zoo has changing exhibits year-round, so be sure to check the website for features that appeal. Also, behind-the-scenes tours and tickets can be purchased that allows guests to have a private tour with a zoo employee. Be sure to check the times for the animal shows as they fill up quickly and seats and viewing spots become limited.
