The Omaha Fire Department was established in 1860, known then as the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company #1. Today, Omaha has 24 fire stations located throughout the city that are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by trained professional Firefighters. Currently the fire department maintains a compliment of 684 Firefighters, Fire Apparatus Engineers, Fire Captains, Drill Master, Paramedic Shift Supervisors, Assistant Fire Marshals, Battalion Chiefs, and Assistant Fire Chiefs and Fire Chief to serve and protect the citizens of Omaha.

Founded in 1952, the Irvington Volunteer Fire Department specializes in firefighting and extrication solutions. It maintains an off-road first response fire truck, pumper, tanker and ambulances. The department responds to more than 600 calls annually. The Irvington Volunteer Fire Department is a nonprofit organization that serves a population of over 20,000 people. In addition, it operates a fire station. The department is a part of the Tri-Mutual Aid Association, Nebraska State Volunteer Fire Association, and Nebraska EMS Association. The Irvington Volunteer Fire Department also offers emergency medical response services. It works in partnership with other local fire departments and Immanuel Hospital.
