Pleasanton Partnerships In Education Foundation (PPIE) is a nonprofit organization established in 1987. The foundation supports the Pleasanton School District through its grants program, which funds enrichment projects at schools. Teachers and students groups can apply for grants in the fall and spring. The foundation raises funds for its program through individual and business contributions, in addition to hosting annual fund-raising events. In 2009, the foundation partnered with parent groups to create the I Love Pleasanton Schools campaign, which helped raise approximately $400,000. In 2010, the foundation, the Pleasanton Unified School District and parent groups launched the CORE campaign with the goal of raising about $950,000 for schools. The Pleasanton Discovery Shop, benefiting the American Cancer Society, has been a member of the community since 1989. A local hot spot for bargain-hunters in search of classic and contemporary fashion, the Discovery Shop also features a variety of artwork, collectibles and household items.
The Furniture Shop five doors down in the Mission Plaza shopping center displays a collection of larger pieces. All proceeds from the store goes to support the work and mission of the American Cancer Society.
The Valley Humane Society, founded in 1987, provides animal care and adoption services for dogs and cats. Committed to its no-kill policy, the organization cares for surrendered pets and works to find new homes for them.
The society is also deeply involved in programs for the community, running a pet-food pantry for low-income families with pets (AniMeals), a pet visitation program for seniors and wounded veterans (Pet Therapy), educational programs to help kids learn about being responsible pet owners (Keeler's Kids and Critter Camp) and a fund to help provide financial assistance for emergency veterinary care (the Just Like New Fund).
This society moved from a small building on Spring Street in downtown Pleasanton to its current location on Nevada Street in April 2007, and will soon begin construction of a new 5,000-square-foot animal shelter.
Child Care Links is a company that links families and government social service agencies to provide child care solutions. Through Child Care Links, income-eligible families can receive funds to pay for child care, and can also obtain resources for finding quality child care. It provides free child care referrals to parents in the Tri-Valley area, and offers valuable one-on-one support for parents as well as employers and child care providers. The Pleasanton office is one of three in Alameda County, providing services in Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin and Sunol.
Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation is an all volunteer organization that provides financial assistance to cancer patients in the Tri-Valley region during treatment. Regardless of age and gender, residents can apply for funds to access acupressure, acupuncture, deep breathing techniques, guided mediation, in addition to visual imagery sessions. Built by the County of Alameda in 1932, the Veterans Memorial Building was transferred to the city on January 7, 1997. The building is used by veterans and also used for city recreational activities, social events, meals programs, city offices and meetings. The building also houses the Veterans Organizations of Pleasanton (VOP), American Legion Post 237, VFW Post 6298 and VFW Post 6298 Ladies' Auxiliary.
