The Department of Human Services is located near Stonington High School. The department, led by Human Services Director Beth-Ann Stewart, is responsible for enhancing the well-being of all residents in Stonington. The department is composed of four offices: recreation, senior services, social services and youth and family services.
Started in 1983, Madison Youth and Family Services delivers a wide range of services to the town's youths and their families. The goal of the agency is to "foster the healthy development of the children of Madison and their families through progressive programs that offer prevention, community coordination and treatment services." Youth programs offered by the organization include Peer Advocates, Peer Helpers, the AIDS Awareness Project, Safe Rides, Perspectives, Girls Group and School-Based Mentoring. Parenting education classes and school-based programs are offered as well.
Portland Youth Services addresses the needs of the entire family with the many programs it offers. All its programs are designed to foster a connection with home, school and community. Its target population includes children up to age 18 and their families. Money for its programs comes from grants, as well as a financial commitment from the Town of Portland. Local businesses and private citizens play an important role with their donations.
The Ellington Youth Services Department is a division of the town's Human Services Department. It strives to provide programs and services that help kids build positive relationships and bond with their families, schools, peers and community. Children from birth through 18 years of age are supported by the department. There are many ongoing programs throughout the school district. The department also oversees the Drug Abuse Prevention Council and its subgroups Parent Connection and Rise Above.
