For the past 38 years, Alley Pond Environmental Center has been providing environmental education to visitors at its locale along Northern Boulevard.

The center, founded by a group of Douglaston activists and teachers, is located within Alley Pond Park, which includes 535 acres of park space that is home to more than 300 species of birds.

APEC offers numerous volunteer programs, after school activities, classes, internships and workshops. The center is currently in the midst of a $7 million renovation that will add an estimated 5,000 square feet to its building.

The park is also the home of the Douglaston Estate Windmill, which was built in 1870.

New York State Museum is a research-backed institution in Albany, N.Y. It contains different artifacts from the state of New York and has exhibits representing various facts of the state. Some of its exhibits are based on wildlife, 9/11 artifacts and memorial, geological artifacts, rocket car, forestry and logging, subway car, native peoples and wooly mammoth. The museum s gallery of old fire engines comprises artifacts of the 18th century. The gift shop at the museum offers various items for sale, including museum publications, New York State regional books and food products, handicrafts and jewelry. It offers 10 percent discount to members at the shop. Formerly located in the state Education Building, New York State Museum is now in the Cultural Education Center, which also houses the New York State Archives and New York State Library. The Vanderbilt Museum is a natural-history museum, historic mansion, planetarium and park located on the 43-acre summer estate of railroad heir and global explorer William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944). The estate, Eagle’s Nest, is an excellent example of the storied Long Island Gold Coast era, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Vanderbilt is engaged in education, collections, and programming. The state-of-the-art Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is a popular year-round venue for education, live music, and entertainment, as well as for educational programming for schools. The Vanderbilt, opened to the public in 1950, just celebrated its 65th anniversary. The Liverpool Shuffle, a popular Long Island Beatles tribute band, will perform on Sunday, December 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Vanderbilt Reichert Planetarium. Tickets: adult $20 (on-line, at Vanderbilt website), or $25 at the door. Children 5-15 pay $15 (on-line or at the door). Children under 5 are free.

Overlooking the Hemstead Harbor, Garvies Point Museum & Preserve is an exhibition devoted to the Native American culture and the science of archaeology. Relating to local regional geology, visitors will find a wealth of artifacts including maps, rocks and fossils found in the northern parts of Long Island. This elaborate museum boasts a well-stocked gift shop with various precious stones and jewelry for sale. Many classes are also available including jewelry workshops and sculpture.

Cornell Plantations are botanical gardens that include the F.R. Newman Arboretum and natural areas. Located in Ithaca, N.Y., it is adjacent to the Cornell University s campus. The arboretum covers an area of more than 150 acres and contains fine collections of chestnuts, conifers, flowering crab apples, maples, oaks, urban trees and walnuts. Cornell Plantations offers noncredit, community outreach programs and tours throughout the year. Its members and Cornell University s students receive a discount on all program fees. It offers two types of guided group tours that include bus and walking tours for youth and adults. As the arboretum, botanical garden and natural areas of the Cornell University, Cornell Plantations is caretaker and source of education about a range of environments. Must see/do at the American Museum of Natural History
Several rooms filled with dinosaur bones are unmissable, with exhibits explaining the linkage between dinosaurs and birds. The Hall of Human Evolution displays our ancestors, including famous Lucy. Many people don't realize the museum includes a planetarium, and the sky shows there explain the origins of the universe.

Admission to the American Museum of Natural History
The museum's posted admission rates are around $20 for adults, with lower rates for students and seniors. If you buy tickets in advance, you'll pay that rate, but if you pay when you arrive, admission is "pay any amount." There are separate charges for special exhibits and 3-D movies.

Parking and public transportation to the American Museum of Natural History
There's a subway entrance right inside the museum; it's easily reached by bus as well. The museum has a parking garage, but you may be able to find free parking on nearby streets.

The museum has a food court and several smaller cafés throughout. You can also step outside the museum to purchase food from the food trucks lining the street outside.
