The Piermont Public Library was founded in September of 1896, but had no permanent home for its first years. Now, over 100 years later, the library is at its third location on Flywheel Park West. The new structure was completed in March of 2007, and is named in honor of Dennis P. McHugh, a New York City firefighter who was killed in the events of September 11. His family donated $500,000 toward the construction of the library.

Since its 2007 move, the renamed Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library has expanded its collection and functioned as a community hub.

The library’s mission is to assemble educational and recreational material; to serve the community as a source of reliable information; to provide a place for the open exchange of ideas and critical thought; and to identify community needs and provide programs of service to meet such needs.

The library engages with the community by hosting art exhibits and film showings and offering programs for adults and children.

The library also offers a variety of services, including:

  • Family museum passes to the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of the City of New York, Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum, Paley Center for Media, Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the Intrepid Sea, Air and space Museum
