The Newman Catholic Center is located close to the UC Santa Cruz campus at the corner of Bay and Meder streets. The center was established when the university opened in 1965, and the congregation now consists of more than 80 students and alumni. Community service is a core part of Newman Catholic Center's mission, and members of the congregation regularly cook a spaghetti dinner at Star of the Sea Catholic Church for the homeless.
Meals on Wheels, located in Live Oak, serves the elderly residents of the area through a partnership with the Live Oak Senior Center, conveniently located next door on the same property. Meals are served weekdays at 4pm inside.
Senior Network Services was established to help seniors and people with disabilities find support services. The organization prints a directory of resources based in Santa Cruz. The directory's contents are also available on the Senior Network Services website. Listings include community centers, employment programs, health support, housing and more.
For more than 25 years, the St. Francis Soup Kitchen has served meals to the homeless and hungry of Santa Cruz. The kitchen is located off River Street near the Old Sash Mill and feeds 190 people on a daily basis. The premises also offer showers, which are open two hours a day. An outdoor patio offers a bike parking area. A row of benches lines one wall of the patio.
