Established in 1919, Braille Institute of America is a private, nonprofit organization that provides services for visually impaired individuals. It offers classes in liberal arts, music, history, creative arts and writing. Braille Institute of America s child development programs include training in the areas of motor skills, socialization, cognition and language. It also offers low vision rehabilitation, and counseling and support services. The institute has a store that offers audio equipments, talking watches, sewing aids, games, and bold and raised-line pads. Additionally, it has more than three mobile units that offer services in rural areas. The institute also hosts seminars on macular degeneration and other eye diseases. About Sight Center of Northwest OhioThe Sight Center of Northwest Ohio offers comprehensive services to people of all ages who are experiencing vision complications that cannot be addressed in the traditional office setting. Founded in 1923 as the Toledo Society for the blind, The Sight Center is a non-profit, 501 ( c ) United Way Agency. It offers a distinguished history of service to persons who are blind or visually impaired throughout a 16-county area in Northwest Ohio.Accredited by the National Accreditation Council of Agencies serving the Blind and Visually Impaired ( NAC ), The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio is equipped to deal with virtually every range of visual impairment from very mild to total blindness. The Center does not provide primary eye care, free vision examinations, or regular prescription eyeglass wear, rather we offer specialized vision rehabilitation services so that people with low vision can make the best use of their remaining vision and people who are blind can continue to live independently.The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio blends a traditional not-for-profit treatment model with a medical office model of care that allows for a rewarding experience for both the client and his/her loved ones. Established in 1938, the Blind Childrens Center in Los Angeles, is a family-centered agency serving children with visual impairments. The center aims to provide a comprehensive program of specialized education and training to optimize the blind or visually impaired child s development and consequent opportunities to lead a meaningful and productive life. The center serves more than 100 children and their families each year through the infant and preschool programs. The center provides a full-inclusion program with 40 percent blind students, 35 percent severely visually impaired students and 25 percent sighted students. Blind Childrens Learning Center is located in Santa Ana, Calif. The center helps develop the full potential of visually impaired children and youth to enable them to lead independent lives. A part of the center s services and programs is the Early Childhood Center that includes eight classrooms and play area for infants and children. The multimedia library at the center provides a place for children to explore tactile, large print and Braille books. Parents, teachers, students and other professionals in the field of visual impairment have access to resources in the library. The on-site counseling office provides a place where children can meet with the school counselor and receive help through play therapy.
